Inspired by the unique nature of the site and its surrounds, Chamberlain Architects’ design intent finds expression in a contemporary tri-level built form that achieves perfect synergy with the surrounding streetscape. Director Glen Chamberlain explains the use of contrasting brick work references the predominant building material in the Parkdale area, and helps to breakdown the scale of the apartment building facing Nepean Highway. Set back from the apartments in the idyllically quiet Thomas Court are four generously proportioned townhomes, with heavily articulated upper levels to create a visually interesting composition. “It was important to come up with a design that could mediate between the distinctly different contexts provided by the two street frontages,” says Glen.
A standout design feature of Topaz is the bright, airy spaces that seamlessly transition to generous outdoor areas. “The majority of the dwellings have been orientated to the north to maximise access to natural light. Combined with generous private open space areas, the dwellings retain a lush suburban feel”, explains Glen.

Bringing a unique architectural approach to landscape design, Jack Merlo has developed a landscape scheme at Topaz to complement the clean architectural lines and full-height doors that spill out to courtyards and secluded balconies, extending the living experience. “The expansive glazing provides beautifully landscaped backdrops to internal spaces,” says Director Jack Merlo.
