Marella: A new expression of Bayside living with Cera Stribley

At Marella, architecture is not simply shaped by its surroundings, it is a considered response to them. Set within Hampton’s established coastal community, the collection of 32 residences draws on the suburb’s architectural heritage, natural landscape and enduring connection to its bayside setting.

For Marella, Cera Stribley looked to Hampton’s distinctive Californian bungalow heritage, reinterpreting its familiar forms, materiality and sense of welcome through a refined contemporary lens.

We sat down with Cera Stribley to explore the thinking behind Marella, from its architectural response to Hampton to the role of materiality, landscape and community in shaping the homes.

What was the starting point for the architectural vision at Marella?

The starting point was a genuine response to Hampton and its distinctive character. It is a suburb with a strong architectural identity, shaped by its coastal setting, established streetscapes and sense of community.

We wanted Marella to feel as though it belonged here, not by replicating the past, but by understanding the qualities that make Hampton special and reinterpreting them for contemporary living.

The Californian bungalow became an important reference point. Its strong forms, generous proportions and connection to gardens provided a foundation for an architectural language that feels familiar yet distinctly contemporary.

Materiality appears to play a significant role in the identity of Marella. What informed the palette?

We wanted the material palette to feel warm, tactile and enduring. The combination of terracotta and soft cream brick gives the building a grounded quality, while burnished metal detailing introduces a subtle contemporary edge. These materials were selected not only for how they look when new, but for how they will age and develop character over time.

How does Marella respond to its coastal location?

The proximity to the ocean was an important influence, but we wanted the connection to feel subtle rather than literal. Marella is inspired by the rhythms and qualities of coastal living — natural light, greenery, open air, texture and a sense of calm. These ideas are expressed through the building’s landscaped courtyards, outdoor spaces and material palette.

Even the arrival experience has been conceived as a transition from the bay into a more tranquil residential environment. The linear water garden, planting and terracotta paving create a sense of arrival and introduce a gentle coastal rhythm.

Tell us about the arrival experience at Marella.

Arrival was an opportunity to establish the character of Marella from the very first moment. The entrance has been conceived almost like a boutique hotel — private, calm and considered. A meandering pathway moves through lush planting towards the residences, with a linear water garden creating a moment of pause.

The intention is to make coming home feel like a ritual.

Community is another important element of Marella. How have you approached shared spaces?

We wanted the communal spaces to feel genuinely useful and inviting rather than simply being amenities. The shared lounge is designed as an extension of the home – a warm, relaxed environment where residents can gather, entertain or simply spend time. A custom bookshelf, fireplace and kitchenette give the space a residential quality, while the adjoining outdoor dining area and reflection pond create opportunities to connect with the landscape.

The central light-well also becomes a gallery space, providing an opportunity to showcase the work of local artists and introduce a layer of culture into the everyday experience of the building.

What do you hope residents feel when they arrive home at Marella?

A sense of calm and belonging. Marella is designed to feel connected to Hampton while also providing a sense of retreat. From the landscaped arrival and communal spaces through to the individual residences, there is a consistent focus on warmth, privacy and connection.

Ultimately, we wanted to create homes that feel timeless rather than trend-driven — architecture with a strong sense of place that will continue to feel relevant as Hampton evolves.
